STEM Alliance

STEM Alliance

HKIC establishes the STEM Alliance in order to bring together high school teachers and students in a city-wide effort to promote STEM education under the direction of Education Bureau. We are committed to facilitating STEM education and knowledge-based and experience-based activities with aim to promote secondary student's exposure and awareness of engineering and science, so as to prepare them for their future learning and development in innovation and technology . The alliance is led by a steering group with representatives from educational providers, higher education institutions, the Development Bureau, Education Bureau and the construction industry of Hong Kong.

Work Objectives

1. Assist secondary schools to promote STEM education. Through organizing different activities, the Alliance enhances student's interests and understanding of related projects in construction / engineering industries, thereby enabling them to build  scientific thinking and learning patterns. Activities are classified as follows:

  • Other Learning Experience (OLE)-In coping with the OLE (work-related experience) requirements in the senior secondary school system, the Alliance will provide students with broad and diversified learning opportunities so as to promote their whole-person development and enable them to apply acquired theories to practical situations, thereby boosting student's abilities in tackling difficulties and motivating their creative thinking.
  • Thematic seminars-STEM specialists, professionals from the industries and scholars will host such seminars to share with the people their specialized academic knowledge or expertise.
  • Experience-based activities-Designed to enable students to question
  • existing stereotypes that are found in academic subjects and allow
  • them to adopt a proactive hand-on approach to
  • acquire unusual learning experience.
  • Competitions-Designed to leverage the competitive and team
  • spirit in students, so as to build their confidence and
  • motivate them to make a difference.

2. Through providing support and teaching resources, the Alliance will help secondary school teachers gain an understanding of the missions of STEM education, especially those missions that are associated with the construction and engineering industries.

3. Through STEM activities, the Alliance will promote the technological development in the construction industry and enhance the image of the industry.

4. Through promoting the network of the Alliance, the CIC will become the bridge of communication between schools and the construction industry, and provide a unified sharing and support platform for STEM and construction / engineering industries-related activities.
