To formulate a plan for HKIC to assist secondary schools in promoting STEAM education in accordance with the policy of the Education Bureau on STEAM;
To organise activities connecting the construction industry and STEAM to cultivate students' interest and awareness of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics related subjects;
To promote innovative technologies in the construction industry through STEAM Alliance activities, enhance the image of the construction industry, and attract youngsters to join the industry; and
To provide a communication platform for secondary school teachers on STEAM education.
Introduction
HKIC established the STEM Alliance in 2018 and restructured it as the STEAM Alliance in 2022 to better align it with the latest education policies and direction. The Alliance is overseen by a Steering Group whose members include the Development Bureau, STEM scholars, school sponsoring bodies and representatives from the construction industry.
STEAM education is the new mainstay for future developments and receives considerable attention from the government as shown by the fact that the Chief Executive’s 2022 and 2023 Policy Addresses both mentioned promoting STEAM education. To tie in with the innovative and technology (I&T) development, it has been announced that the Education Bureau will step up its efforts in promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) education to help students build a solid foundation. The latest Policy Address went even further by announcing that the Government would gradually introduce a Science subject in primary schools, launch programme in support of the Mathematics curriculum and take further steps to identify and nurture local STEAM elites.
The STEAM Alliance of Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC) organises various collaborative activities, especially those related to the integration and development of STEAM and the construction industry, for secondary schools in Hong Kong in order to increase students’ exposure to and knowledge about engineering and technology so that they can have a solid foundation for education in the future and I&T development. These measures also reflect HKIC’s mission of whole person education.
Currently, the HKIC STEAM Alliance consists of 79 schools which share the aim of promoting STEAM education.
