The Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council (CIC) have been adopting a multi-pronged strategy to address the manpower demand of the construction industry, including increasing training capacity of its Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC) to attract new blood to relieve the pressure on manpower within the industry. The HKIC strives for uplifting the skill levels of in-service workers, and launched the Special Class of "Multi-skilled” training course under the Intermediate Tradesman Collaborative Training Scheme (Skills Enhancement Courses) in January 2024.
This Special Class aims to encourage registered semi-skilled workers and skilled workers to receive training of another work trade (50 hours in total) and obtain relevant intermediate trade qualifications, thereby enable workers to participate in more construction projects, enhancing their employment opportunities and fully utilising their talent and skills, thus unleashing the greater potential of the workforce, as well as facilitating a more flexible deployment of the construction workforce. The HKIC will also provide 70% tuition fee subsidy for each trainee.
The “Multi-skilled ” training course is divided into electrical & mechanical trades and non-electrical & mechanical trades, and is provided by training bodies appointed by HKIC.
